Bisate: Seasons change and the reserve grows

As we move into the second half of the year, I can’t help but feel the waves of excitement really start gathering momentum. We had an incredible start to the year, and we can only thank our amazing guests from across the globe for making Wilderness Bisate the vibrant and warm sanctuary that it is. We have just had one of our busiest months on record, while at the same time one of our driest months to boot… Meanwhile, Wilderness Bisate Reserve continues to take shape on the other side of the hill, and our team continues to swell as we prepare to ready our new offering to the world.

The Bisate landscape

Our Bisate Concession is looking amazing, with all the hard work from the last year really starting to show now. The bamboo forest that forms the immediate view of the lodge is reaching ever higher into the sky, and the redwood forests on the property’s highest hills are starting to thicken up and form a beautiful rust-coloured contrast to the unending green foliage.

Bisate’s “magic ingredient”

As we look forward to the rest of 2024, we also look back and use this time to reflect on lessons learned and relationships forged with guests along the way. The “magic ingredient”, or “secret sauce” if you will, that makes Bisate unique is the sheer variety of guests who pass through these hallowed walls. People from all walks of life come together at our property and create a very different feeling to the lodge. There are always interesting stories being shared over a cocktail at the Emerald Bar; many a hug and fond farewell are shared in our Kwanda day lounge, and future trips are even planned together by fast friends – that only a few days ago were complete strangers. This is the power of international travel, and why we do this job with such enthusiasm and passion.

Lastly, we would like to highlight the incredible job that our unsung heroes and behind-the-scenes heavy lifters at head office do, from our procurement team that finds the strangest of items in the unlikeliest of places, to the seemingly unending resilience of our staff driver Amili, who shuttles staff between our three properties in Rwanda. You guys are legends. Let’s not forget the charismatic Aline, who runs our community relations and CITW initiative, and our fantastic Travel Shop that keeps us so busy up here in the north. It’s another six months to go until we are a quarter of the way through this century, and we look forward to it with the utmost anticipation.

Bisate Family

For the last month we have engaged in a vast recruitment undertaking, and I would just like to highlight some of the extraordinary talent that Rwanda has to offer. With our new lodge offering coming soon to the Bisate Concession, the hunt has been on to find more talented staff to swell our numbers from the incredible pool in Rwanda. We have always known that Rwanda has some of the most hospitable and genuinely amazing people on Planet Earthm but we have been truly blown away by the sheer number of applications, not to mention incredible depth of skill, that this country has waiting in the wings.

Jolly – Since joining us, Jolly has been like a lightning strike on a clear day! She brings an amazing energy to our Front-Of-House team, along with an absolutely wicked sense of humour. Jolly is someone who you just can’t help but smile at as she mixes your favourite cocktail. Jolly is very interested in wine and food and hopes to one day be a manager of her own lodge. (I am starting to worry about my own job now!)

Michele – No stranger to Wilderness, Michele has worked at our sister lodge Wilderness Sabyinyo for 10 years. During his time at Sabyinyo, he has grown into an amazing chef and set himself on the path to the incredible world of French cuisine. I must say, he has a true gift, and after tasting his first amazing roast chicken with béarnaise sauce (that I suspect was his way of getting me onto his side), I am starting to seriously stress about my waistline if he keep trying to feed me into submission! We welcome Michele to Bisate in the role of Junior Sous Chef at Bisate and wish him the absolute best!

Felicite – The first thing that you notice about Felicite when she walks into the room is a smile that would make Julia Roberts blush! Felicite is our newest Front-of-House member and has joined us in the role of Trainee Waitress. She brings with her a love of coffee art, cocktail-making and a great affinity for South African wines! Welcome Felicite, and we can’t wait to see you grow as your beverage skills continue to dazzle the palates of the world!

Everything. You can immediately tell how genuine the people who work here are, genuinely the kindest group of people I have ever met! Special shout out to William, Jimmy (Jimmelion) JP, Elie. You are all the best ever!!!
