Kafue - Zambia’s biggest national park

Kafue National Park is about 22,500 square kilometres in size, making it the biggest national park in Zambia, and home to a tremendous diversity of bird and animal species. Up in the north of Kafue lies an intimate and rustic four-tented bush camp called Wilderness Busanga Bush Camp (fondly known as BBC), named after the Busanga Plains where it is situated. It is a truly unique wilderness camp right in the heart of the Busanga Plains.

Busanga Plains weather in October

The temperatures were pretty high in the month of October 2024, an indication that it is the end of the season, and we are just about to close the camp as it only operates through the dry winter season from June to end-October. We had temperatures starting from 8⁰C and heading up to very warm at around 4O⁰C.

Activities at Busanga Bush Camp

Morning and afternoon game drives are what we are offering at the moment – the ideal way to take in the abundance of the Busanga Plains. Our guests have all been mesmerised by the wildlife activity and we are proud to exceed their expectations.

Wildlife sightings in Kafue

The guides will tell their guests that “in the bush every minute is different” – this is their polite way of saying “I will try to find exceptional sightings, but am not promising you”. However, as BBC is famous for lion sightings, and for sure nearly all our guests had the opportunity to see the prides, including the warring males Mohawk and Alex. Yaya has six cubs and Princess has two cubs. Pyben, our guide, also spotted cheetahs on several occasions.

Guests witnessed kills too; however, a truly outstanding sighting was when Pyben and his guests witnessed a DOUBLE kill at the same spot.

The birders returned home still glowing from the excitement of having some fantastic sightings.

Amongst the wildlife spotted were hartebeest, sable and roan antelope, buffalo, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, Burchell’s zebra, kudu, wildebeest, and elephant wandering through camp – and not forgetting our resident red lechwe herd in front of camp.

On a sad note, a buffalo ended up stuck in drying mud, and was unable to move until it met its fate.

Busanga Bush Camp staff

Our BBC team is one of the best, with excellent experience. The team consists of Winnard, Chiyambi and Fixon running front-of-house, with Lemon, Doozy and Moses in the kitchen.

Our housekeeping is manned by Paggy, Richard and Kennedy, while Clement and Mathews are our groundsmen.

One of our guides Willard has been on leave, but Pyben was equal to the task.

Our Assistant Manager Kennedy was also on leave, and Richard has been managing the camp.
