Hwange landscape and vegetation

Wilderness Little Makalolo Zimbabwe Hwange

The Kalahari appleleaf trees around camp have retained their lush green colour, attracting elephants to the guest tents, which our visitors absolutely love. The teak trees and bluebush shrubs are in full-colour mode, and the landscape is looking fresh and exciting, with the grasses showing signs of life. Patches of some green are visible, but most parts of the concession are still dry as we have not recorded good rains yet.

Hwange weather in October

October was characterised by very hot days, though it was fairly cool at night, with wind during the day. The land is very dry, though the last few days of October enjoyed a few showers around the concession, and we recorded 3mm at Little Mak. The temperatures were variable, and on some days it was overcast and showing signs of rain, which we desperately need.

The mammals of Makalolo

Waking up to thundering lion roars is one magical experience guests at Little Makalolo are now used to. We had lions in camp on numerous occasions, and the sound is just awesome.

Cheetah were seen regularly, as were giraffe, wildebeest and buffalo.

Elephants also never disappoint our guests who spend time in our hide, and most come back to camp wanting to go straight back and have the same experience.

Roan and sable antelope as well as zebras are commonly seen at our waterhole, providing our guests with great entertainment while they are in camp.

Birds and birding in Hwange

Pennant-winged nightjar, African paradise flycatcher, and African barred owlets are just some of the avian special sighted in camp, and our birder guests were very happy and excited to have seen them.

More and more migratory birds are trickling into the concession, and it is always special to hear guests return from their drives so happy about the birds they have seen.
