Early summer Hwange landscapes

Wilderness Little Makalolo Zimbabwe Lounge Main area

Most of the trees have shed their leaves, announcing that winter is over. The Zambezi teak is also budding, confirming that spring is upon us, and the rains should not be far off. Most of the grasses and shrubs have dried up, and we are experiencing the seasonal winds, creating dramatically dusty sunsets, great for photography. Around camp the appleleaf trees are still green, attracting elephants to the guests’ tents, which the guests absolutely love.

Climate and Temperatures

Bush television, the camp firepit, is always a delight for our guests; a place to unwind and relax, whilst they get warm, with temperatures still low in the mornings and evenings. However, September is the time of great changes in the temperatures, and it is now hot and windy. With the winds, we are hoping for early rains.

Mammals of Makalolo

Little Makalolo never disappoints in terms of animal sightings right in camp, and guests witnessed a leopard kill a duiker, as well as lions taking down an elephant calf right in front of them. The two cheetah boys never disappoint either, always there to present special sightings to our guests. Madison Pan continues attracting lots of jumbos coming to drink and mud-bathe, and is an area known for its hyena sightings too.

Birds & Birding

As temperatures have started to rise, heralding the new season, the yellow-billed kites have started to come in from Europe, as have the migratory intra-African carmine bee-eaters. Birders are still enjoying sightings of rollers, including lilac-breasted and purple rollers. Moreover, we have been hearing thrilling nightjars and African barred owlets calling, the very essence of our African nights. Mother Nature always provides.
