Autumn in the Okavango Delta

Our weather here on the Vumbura Concession in March was amazing. The hot days ended with plenty of rain then cleared up in the evenings. The beauty of our unpolluted skies at night really amazed our guests who were keen to do some star gazing.

The temperatures fluctuated between 19° Celsius and 32°C – in other words, it was most pleasant!

Little Vumbura wildlife sightings

Sightings were exceptional all month with a mother leopard and her cub seen most days, as well as lions and cheetahs. Sable antelopes, giraffes, zebras and the amazing-looking tsessebe, as well as red lechwe, were seen in abundance.

Due to the concession having water everywhere from the exceptional rains, the elephants spent time in the mopane woodlands, while the giraffes and zebras were spotted enjoying the green leaves of the Kalahari apple leaf trees, and all the grasses.

Our vibrant migrant birds are back, making our little paradise even more beautiful with their stunning colouration. Guests don’t have to go too far for birdwatching, and rewarding sightings right on our island were recorded. We saw paradise flycatchers, broad-billed rollers, the thrilling Pel’s fishing owl, as well as gorgeous malachite kingfishers and lilac breasted rollers, all showing off their amazing plumage.

Game drives with beautiful sunsets against the shimmering tall grasses were spectacular.

We also made the most of the high water levels from the heavy rains in early March, and cruising along the channels, enjoying the scenery and abundant birds from the boat, was particularly memorable.

Activities in camp at Little Vumbura

A fulfilling activity offered to guests is basket weaving with our talented ladies. At this time of year, the grasses and palm leaves are still fresh and new, so all of the plants can be utilised.
