Christmas tree planting

It’s said that a society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they will never sit under. In keeping with our commitment to conservation, we decided to celebrate Christmas by giving back to this land that has given us so much. Thus, we hope the shade of the baobab tree we planted with our guests on Christmas morning will be enjoyed by generations (of all species) to come.  The little tree is part of an ongoing baobab rehabilitation effort, which was founded by one of our phenomenal guests, Francesca. While on an unplanned 21-day stay at Mombo during the Covid lockdown, Francesca fell in love with the wilderness – as so many of our guests do. Her unique story led to the founding of this project that she has contributed immensely to. We are eternally grateful to Francesca for her generosity and passion for the wilderness.

Festive football at Mombo

What do you get when you have an aspiring pro football player, a former pro football player and a pro league referee all at Mombo on same day? You get another unforgettable magic moment in the Place of Plenty!  We had one such day on the 29th of December, when we set up a sundowner football game between a wonderful family (who had a number of football enthusiasts amongst them) and the Mombo football team. Having secured the concession trophy in the most recent Christmas Day games, the Mombo football team was eager get back out on the pitch. It was billed as ‘a friendly session to kick the ball around a bit’, but it took on a more competitive turn as the game proceeded.  As the players showcased their skills on the field, the rest of the family enjoyed sundowner drinks while cheering them on from the sidelines.

The last day’s epic sighting on safari

After having had many great sightings during their stay, (including a herd of elephants that took up residence in camp for the week), a few of our guests had opted to stay in while the rest set off for one last afternoon safari. While our guests were enjoying high tea, we got an alert on the radio that a family of ostriches had been spotted no more than a kilometre from camp.  As this was one of the species that many amongst the group were eager to see, word quickly got around and within no time everyone who had opted to stay in camp, quickly jumped into the game viewers and set off on an exhilarating drive to track down the world’s tallest bird (which can reach heights of as much as 2.7 metres or 9 feet!).

Compliments of the season

As we ease into 2025 with our resolutions for the year in tow, we do so with the previous year in the rear-view mirror, happy to take the time to reflect on all the wins and shortcomings of the previous year. While the wins are cause for celebration, the losses must not be ignored, as they offer an opportunity to learn, grow and take on the new year as better versions of ourselves. We go into 2025 with a renewed commitment to all manner of goals. As is the Wilderness Way, our passion for hospitality and conservation are an integral part of Mombo’s vision board for 2025.
