News from Volcanoes National Park and surrounds

February was a truly remarkable month at Sabyinyo, filled with sunny days that ended in gentle drizzle, misty evenings that kept our surroundings lush, and the joy of seeing our freshly planted trees grow even faster. While guest activity was quieter this month, the Sabyinyo team made the most of the peaceful mornings by deep cleaning the lodge, repainting floors, and celebrating our heritage through traditional Rwandan songs and dance.

In recent years, we have been gradually reducing eucalyptus on the property and replacing it with indigenous plant species. This effort is carried out through Umuganda, a Rwandan community-driven initiative that brings us together to care for our environment. What made this month’s Umuganda particularly special was an unexpected visit from the Muhoza gorilla family. For over four hours, all 22 members of the family joined in – enthusiastically stripping the bark from our eucalyptus trees and sipping the nutrient-rich sap. This sap, known for its slightly sweet taste and high mineral content, is a welcome supplement to their natural diet of leaves, stems, and fruits. Witnessing these majestic creatures play a role in our reforestation efforts was a truly unforgettable experience, reinforcing the deep connection between Sabyinyo and its wild inhabitants.

Sabyinyo guest news

The mornings have been beautiful, with gentle sunshine and cool winds, creating perfect weather for our guests to trek up the mountain to visit the gorillas and golden monkeys. During heavy rains, it is said that gorillas tend to stay close together, moving around less in order to keep warm – especially the mothers who’ll cuddle their babies. However, this month brought sunny afternoons, which made the gorilla visits even more special, as the gorillas were very active. The sunny weather also allowed guests to enjoy activities on the property and surrounds, including visiting our vegetable and flower gardens, as well as exploring the nearby village. February was truly a wonderful time for our guests, whose feedback confirmed how thrilled they were to have these once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Among the many magical moments, the highlight of the month for guests was when the Muhoza family decided to trek down to our property. Four guests had prepared for a challenging hike, expecting muddy, slippery trails, but to their surprise, the Muhoza gorilla family was right near their cottages! It was an unexpected and unforgettable experience for them.

Sabyinyo staff

Since the month was quieter, the staff took full advantage of the opportunity to come together. It was the perfect time for some behind-the-scenes activities, such as Umuganda, where the team carried out various maintenance tasks and planted more indigenous trees around the lodge. These activities not only bring together staff from all departments, but they also strengthen the bond between them, as they work towards a shared goal and achieve great results.

Additionally, some of our staff had the unforgettable opportunity to meet the Muhoza gorilla family during the primate family’s unexpected visit to the lodge. It was a very exciting and memorable moment for them! We’re now eagerly looking forward to what March has in store for us.
