Sabyinyo weather in January

In Kinyarwanda, January is called Mutarama, symbolising a time for gathering, and celebrating the start of a new year. And with January’s cooler but less rainy days, it allowed us to fully embrace that spirit here at Wilderness Sabyinyo, as we gathered with our guests for sundowners and toasted the beginning of another incredible year. This was particularly joyful for us, as we also celebrated their adventures from the day, creating the most memorable times for us all.

We are excitedly looking forward to what this new year has in store for us, and to the happy moments that will be created for our lovely guests by our staff.

Sabyinyo guest activities

January was nothing short of remarkable; we were busy, which is always wonderful, with our guests creating a lively environment filling every corner of the lodge with joy.

The weather didn’t disappoint either, helping create easier treks with less mud. The sunny days led to wonderful afternoons and evenings marked by sundowners, with drinks around the fire pit, stories and dancing.

We have also noticed that most of our guests enjoyed a nature walk on the property. The grounds offer wonderful birdwatching, and a visit to the vegetable and flower gardens on the property is very rewarding.

Others also appreciated visiting the local community, and met with residents in the village. This left them filled with happiness after this truly life-changing learning experience with the local people.

Sabyinyo staff news

The Sabyinyo team started the year energised, and filled with appreciation for our achievements and milestones in 2024. Everyone is really engaged, showing up with fresh motivation and focused on growth, both professionally and personally. Everyone is eager for new challenges, and to refine their skills and contribute even more to our shared success. We really can’t wait for what the rest of the year has in store for us!

Our team has also kept busy, with everyone providing the best service and creating lasting memories for our guests.

Sabyinyo reforestation

We are also anticipating the upcoming rainy season that will allow us to plant the saplings that our agronomists have been preparing for us this whole month.

Here’s to a year of progress, teamwork, and continued achievements and the promise of a wonderful 2025!

Sabyinyo Community – Kitchen Garden Project

The Kitchen Garden Project was initiated in early 2024 with the aim of addressing malnutrition in the villages around Wilderness Sabyinyo. The lodge, in partnership with local communities, provided support in the form of agricultural training, seeds, tools, and resources to enable families to cultivate their own gardens. By growing a variety of crops, the project aims to improve access to fresh, nutrient-rich produce, and reduce the rate of malnutrition.

The Kitchen Garden Project has made significant strides in improving the nutritional health of the communities in the Kinigi and Nyange Sectors. The residents have experienced a remarkable transformation in their food security, thanks to the establishment of these sustainable vegetable gardens. As of this month, the harvests include a wide variety of nutritious vegetables, such as spinach, cabbages, and mushrooms, which are not only enhancing the diets of local families, but also contributing to their overall wellbeing.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the project is the visible joy and pride among the community members. The sight of beautiful smiles and the sense of achievement after a successful harvest speaks volumes about the impact the project has had on local lives. The vegetables are not only a source of food, but also a symbol of the empowerment and resilience the project has fostered.

Families now have access to fresh, healthy food on a regular basis, which has helped to combat the effects of malnutrition in the villages. The variety of vegetables grown in the gardens has diversified the diets of many families, which previously relied on limited and less nutritious food sources. The success of this project is particularly noteworthy given the challenging environmental conditions that the communities in Kinigi and Nyange face.

This has been the most wonderful experience; besides the gorillas the people are the kindest most helpful you could ask for. The property is gorgeous.
