October at Sabyinyo

October was nothing short of magic at beautiful Wilderness Sabyinyo – if quite different from previous years, weather-wise, and somewhat less busy. Nevertheless, it was action-packed for the team who were gearing up to work on our back-of-house activities, while ensuring that our guests got to enjoy every aspect of their stay.

Guest experiences at Sabyinyo

We hosted a fascinating variety of guests this month, from single travellers to honeymooners and families celebrating. It’s always an honour to see how Sabyinyo feels like home to everyone, and we are still amazed by how much our guests enjoyed their treks this month. The weather definitely contributed, with the days being on the warmer side.

On the property, our guests this month were in for a treat as the nature trails are now looking lusher than ever, and bird-watching has also grown in popularity thanks to the birds that are now enjoying the flowers and vegetation growing in abundance around Sabyinyo. We are thrilled to be seeing a noticeable increase in the populations of the bird species here.

SACOLA and Sabyinyo team’s Umuganda

The Sabyinyo team, in partnership with SACOLA (the Sabyinyo Community Livelihood Association, which owns Sabyinyo) came together during October to continue working on the reforestation plans for the lodge.

This month our main Umuganda (a national holiday observed on the last Saturday of the month) focus was planting trees, and we put in over 2,500 across the property. Different species were planted in the areas where we have been harvesting eucalyptus; it was an activity that certainly bought both parties together, and we are all looking forward to seeing the property go back to its natural state thanks to the indigenous trees that are now flourishing all over the property.

Sabyinyo staff news

October holds a special place in the team’s heart, as we celebrate the anniversary of Sabyinyo joining the Wilderness family. So far, it has been a wonderful ride filled with much growth that all of us at Sabyinyo have enjoyed, and we are excited to see what the future will bring the team.

With the quieter lodge, this month the team focused on our back-of-house plans, and we planted over 3,400 trees throughout October. We have also been helping the tree nursery with seeds for saplings to plant during this rainy season.

Wow – what a special place! The service here has been outstanding. We really enjoyed the gorilla trekking, the food and bar and all the fireplaces – mostly we enjoyed the people!
