Gorilla trekking in September

It feels unreal to be gearing up for the last quarter of 2024. The whole year has been very fulfilling, with much joy and success for both our staff and guests. The weather didn’t disappoint either, with the rainier days leaving Wilderness Sabyinyo and its surroundings looking lush and green.

This month delivered beautiful mornings for our guests, though the rainy evenings made the guests’ activities in the park a bit harder than they have been for the last three months of more dry and dusty conditions. Luckily the gorillas were mostly close to the park boundary enjoying the fresh bamboo shoots, giving everyone who trekked quite the show.

Guest experiences at Sabyinyo

Our team has been working very hard to push our guests’ dining experiences to even greater heights. Our kitchen team worked all month long to develop even more gluten-free menu options for our guests, trying and testing recipes to emerge with the best. Practice truly does make perfect, and now our guests can enjoy more of a variety, regardless of dietary requirements. We have to say we couldn’t have done it without the procurement team in our Kigali office, who made it their mission to get us all the ingredients that we needed.

Sabyinyo vegetable garden

Our veggie garden continues to flourishing, and the wonderful summer has left us with loads of produce. Michael and the kitchen team have harvested vegetables such as cauliflower and cabbage and so much more, including fruit and herbs from the garden. Already an increase compared to previous months, we cannot wait for the next harvest that promises even more.

Sabyinyo reforestation

The rains gradually arrived during September, and our agronomists couldn’t have been any happier, as they slotted in perfectly with their reforestation plans. The tree nursery is full of different varieties of tree saplings that have grown really well during the summer. Fidel and his team have planted over 200 different tree species across the property, and we absolutely cannot wait to see the trees growing around the camp, while we continue to plant even more in the next coming months.

Staff news

September was a very good time for our staff. As we were slowly getting less busy, we could easily see how the staff were anticipating the rainy season and looking forward to working on more back-of-house jobs, to get our property to look even more beautiful – and boy have the ideas been flowing in.

Wilderness Rwanda & CITW facilitate 200 scholarships for 2024-25 school year

The funding for these 200 scholarships has been made possible by generous donations from Wilderness Bisate, Sabyinyo and Magashi guests and trade partners. The 200 students are sponsored for six years of schooling at Bisate Secondary Schools near Wilderness Bisate, and at Rushubi Secondary School situated close to Wilderness Sabyinyo – both in the Volcanoes National Park area; other schools the children attend are Rwabiharamba Secondary School in the area just outside Akagera National Park (where Wilderness Magashi is located) and Kinihira Secondary School close to Gishwati Forest. Furthermore, as more of our students advance to higher grades, they move to other schools, and an additional 57 secondary schools are now involved.

To ensure that all 200 students were ready to start their first school day of the year with a big smile, our CITW team visited all of them in the first week of September to provide them with the school materials they will need for this year. Backpacks, notebooks, calculators, rulers, pens, pencils and mathematical sets were distributed, and received with big smiles.
