Shumba season back in action

We were all very excited to be back in the beautiful Busanga Plains here in the greater Kafue National Park – a very remote, tranquil and unspoilt piece of paradise filled with birdlife, mammals and insects… and not forgetting the beautiful sunrises and sunsets! As the Wilderness Shumba team, we started out the month full of positive energy and ready to deliver that special touch of service to our guests.

Winter weather at Shumba

The temperatures during June ranged between an average minimum of 5° Celsius and a maximum temperature of 27° C. We had a few misty mornings during the month but not as much mist as in previous seasons due to the lack of water in the area, caused by much drier summer season.

Wildlife sightings in the Busanga Plains

The animal sightings were amazing during the month, with lions coming right onto the camp’s main deck! The lion population has increased, with two lionesses, Yaya and Princess, each having produced four cubs. Princess has the youngest cubs, which are about two months old.

There were also new sightings of three young male cheetahs, as well as a solitary cheetah, and we hope these beautiful animals will be around for the entire 2024 season.

With the drought that the country experienced in the 2023/2024 rainy season, most of the waterholes in the woodlands at the bottom of the plains have dried out. This has driven the animals towards the river channels as they seek to quench their thirst – and also ultimately increased the animal sightings within and around camp. Big herds of sable, roan, zebra and wildebeest were seen not far from Shumba.

Sundowners and traditional boma dinners

Continuing where we left off last season, we wowed our guests with stunning Shumba sundowners, offering G&Ts, Vodka Oranges and additional cocktail touches! The finger-licking fire-grilled chicken wings rounded out fantastic safari experiences for our guests as they enjoyed amazing Busanga sunsets over a cold local beer.
