Kafue safari season closes on a high

After the harsh drought that hit the country and the Busanga Plains, the rains that swept through the Kafue recently brought some hope of life, and tender new grass is already growing. The wildebeest and some other antelopes have started dropping their young, further welcoming the onset of the summer rains.

Weather at Shumba in October

October is the hottest month of the year in Zambia, and we saw an increase in temperatures from an average minimum of 12 degrees Celsius to an average maximum of 36 degrees Celsius. Some rains were experienced during the month which brought life to the vegetation, and despite the heat during the day, mornings and evenings are always cooler!

Busanga Plains wildlife sightings in October

The battle for kingship between Mohawk and Alex continued during the month, though both contenders have now clearly set their boundaries within the Busanga Plains. Mohawk has resorted to maintaining the most north-western corner of the Busanga Plains, while Alex has continued to rule from around Acacia Island all the way down to the south-eastern section of the Busanga Plains.

The three Shumba Boys, who left the Busanga Plains last season, were spotted south-east of Shumba during the month, and there is a big chance that they might return next season and join in the battle for kingship.

One of the lionesses from the pride, Nala, gave birth to four adorable cubs, bringing joy and excitement to all. However, we are concerned about their survival chances with the heavy rains approaching. The Busanga Plains can be unforgiving when the heavens open with the rains, and the cubs’ vulnerability weighs heavily on our minds.

Will they survive the treacherous terrain and unpredictable weather? Only time will tell.

Stay tuned for updates on the cubs’ journey, the three Shumba Boys and the ongoing battle for kingship between Mohawk and Alex when we return in the 2025 season.

Special guest moments

We ended the season with a beautiful sundowner drink stop at the Hippo bar in the Busanga Plains, and a lovely dinner under the stars with our all-weather guests who have visited Shumba many times, Sandra and Beverly!
