Discover December at Magashi

December marked the end of an incredible year at Wilderness Magashi, filled with unforgettable wildlife moments, team celebrations, and milestones worth cherishing.

A tale of dominance and survival

In 2019, five black rhinos were introduced to the northern part of Akagera National Park, including Mandela, one of three males. Today, Mandela remains the sole surviving male of this group, asserting his dominance in the Magashi Private Concession.

Earlier this year, Mandela went missing, leading guides to speculate whether he had ventured to another part of the park. After an intensive search, he was found in the Magashi Concession, nursing wounds from a recent conflict. The source of the injuries became clear when our guide, Alphonse, and some guests spotted Mandela facing off with Kagenza, a male rhino from the southern part of Akagera. The two had clashed over Olmoti, a female rhino who had accompanied Mandela from the Czech Republic and recently gave birth. Both males were vying for her attention, resulting in a fierce battle. Mandela, despite his injuries, has reclaimed his territory, showcasing his resilience and strength. It was a thrilling yet poignant reminder of nature’s untamed beauty.

December also delighted our guests with extraordinary wildlife sightings. Despite the rainy season, leopards and lions made frequent appearances, providing magical moments that earned glowing feedback from our guests.

Celebrating team spirit: End-of-year party and staff achievements

The Magashi team came together for an unforgettable end-of-year celebration. Each staff member drew a name to exchange thoughtful gifts with, creating a joyful atmosphere filled with laughter and camaraderie. Even team members on leave returned to join the festivities, showcasing the strong bonds that define our camp’s community.

Long-serving staff members who have been with Wilderness for five years were honoured with certificates and bonuses, a heartfelt acknowledgment of their dedication and loyalty.

Staff appreciation and the talented Magashi team

Our staff’s talents extend far beyond their daily responsibilities. Emmanuel Niyonizeye, one of our exceptional community chefs, not only excels in the kitchen, but also serves as a trusted herbal healer, often assisting colleagues with remedies for stomach ailments. His kindness and skill have earned him immense respect among the team.

Behind the scenes

Our maintenance team, inevitably working behind the scenes, ensures that Magashi operates seamlessly. Their efforts are vital in delivering exceptional experiences for both guests and staff, and we deeply appreciate their contributions.

December’s stories are a testament to the unique harmony of nature, teamwork, and resilience that defines Wilderness Magashi. As we bid farewell to 2024, we celebrate the adventures, challenges, and successes that have shaped an extraordinary year.

Excitement for the Magashi Peninsula construction project

We are thrilled to announce the construction of Magashi Peninsula, an exciting new eight-bed camp on our concession. The most high-end lodge in all of Akagera, it will still embody the true essence of Magashi. This new development promises to offer a unique and intimate East African safari experience, perfectly blending with its natural surroundings.

Our team is filled with anticipation for this new chapter, and we can’t wait to share more updates as the project progresses. Stay tuned for what promises to be an extraordinary addition to our story!
