A wild Akagera symphony

After a hot month punctuated by a few welcome rain showers, we pause to reflect on a vibrant past few weeks. Our hearts overflow with gratitude – gratitude for the untamed beauty of the wildlife, the enchanting connections with our guests, and the unwavering dedication of our team. It was a month where unforgettable moments unfolded, weaving together the story of Magashi into yet another remarkable chapter. Looking forward to March, we are filled with anticipation for the adventures and wonders that await us in this wild paradise.

A new dawn for the lions of Akagera

February marked a historic milestone for the lions of Akagera, a chapter we will remember for years to come. The news of Mahoro and her daughter’s mating with a nomadic male last month was followed by another extraordinary event – Mahoro’s grandchild, too, found her mate, further securing the future of these majestic creatures. Mahoro, a cornerstone of the lion pride, continues to reign over the Magashi Concession, and is a beacon of hope for the next generation. Cubs are on the horizon, and we eagerly await this next glorious chapter in the saga of lion conservation at Magashi.

Mbaraga: The Mighty Elephant’s Thrilling Visit

In February, we were graced with the awe-inspiring presence of Mbaraga – the largest and most powerful elephant in Akagera. A true titan of the wild, Mbaraga’s size and strength commanded reverence as he wandered near our camp, so close that it felt as though he could pluck a morsel from our guests' plates with his dexterous trunk. To witness Mbaraga in his full glory was a humbling reminder of the raw beauty and unbridled power of wild animals. His visit left us in wonderment, as we realised how small we truly are in the face of such magnificence.

The Battle at Lake Rwanyakazinga

A dramatic and riveting spectacle unfolded at Lake Rwanyakazinga this month – a battle of dominance between father and son. Mugabe, a colossal bull hippo, has long ruled these waters at Magashi, but his male offspring, Kibibi, began to challenge that reign. Not out of pride, but necessity.

In the heart of the wild, a young male cannot remain in the shadow of his father forever. The aging Mugabe, growing weary, began to chase Kibibi to the edges of the lake. Kibibi, swift and agile, easily evaded him, understanding that survival isn’t always about brute force – it’s about patience, strategy, and knowing when to stand firm.

One evening, as the tension in the air grew thick, Kibibi made his stand. When Mugabe charged with his usual fury, Kibibi, unshaken, turned to face the older hippo. The moment was electric. Mugabe paused in the face of Kibibi’s defiance. And in that pause, Kibibi understood the truth of the wild: survival isn’t just about strength. It is about courage, wisdom, and knowing when to fight – and when to prevail.

This struggle is as old as time, and a testament to the instinctive dance between power and patience that defines the wild.

Rare Wildlife Sightings: Glimpses of the Extraordinary

February was also a month rich with rare and extraordinary sightings. A kestrel swooped down with its raptor’s grace, capturing a speckled mousebird in a flash of precision. The moment was breathtaking, a reminder of the untamed beauty that surrounds us.

We were also blessed with the sighting of a one-week-old white rhino calf, delicate yet resolute. Seeing this vulnerable, newborn creature nestled against its mother’s protective flank was a reminder of the fragility and resilience of life in the wild – an unforgettable encounter that touched our guests deeply.

Celebrating Our Service Team: The Heartbeat of Magashi

At Magashi, we know that exceptional service is the secret to creating truly unforgettable experiences. This month, we take a moment to honor our incredible Service Team – the unsung heroes who work tirelessly behind the scenes and in the heart of the action.

A special shout-out goes to Doris, from Hospitality Support, and Pascasie from Wilderness HR, for their recent training session on the Wilderness Way. Their dedication to excellence serves as a reminder of the core values that guide our work – teamwork, sustainability, and the highest standards of service. Together, they ensure that every guest’s stay is imbued with warmth, kindness, and personalised care.
