Rare wildlife sightings in unforgettable Akagera

March at Wilderness Magashi was a quieter month in terms of guest occupancy, but it was filled with classic safari moments. Even though the pace slowed, nature still brought us rare wildlife sightings and meaningful connections, deepening our bond with this extraordinary landscape, not to mention each other.

March on the Magashi Peninsula site was filled with exceptional wildlife encounters. One of the highlights was during an evening game drive, when our guests had the rare opportunity to witness a leopard hunt and feast on a catfish by the lakeshore. The scene was swift and intense, and difficult to capture on camera, but the guests were left with vivid memories that would last a lifetime.

Even in camp at Magashi, we often witness surprising moments in nature. Recently, a resident leopard, after hunting a baboon, chose to drag its prey closer to Tent 8 instead of hiding it away. The leopard seemed to recognise the area as special and rested under the room, staying out of sight of the guests. This unusual behaviour showed the leopard’s intelligence, and a powerful reminder of how animals adapt to their surroundings.

Another rare and exciting sighting took place during a game drive in Akagera National Park. Our guests were lucky to see a serval cat, a shy felid elusive. As the group learned about conservation, our guide spotted the serval moving through the tall grass. He carefully led the group closer, allowing everyone to admire its stunning golden fur and large ears. This was a special opportunity to see this beautiful predator, and it served as an important lesson on wildlife conservation.

Kigali staff in-camp experience and cross-training

March was also a month of growth and collaboration within the Wilderness Rwanda team. We had the pleasure of welcoming our Sales team from the Kigali office for a hands-on experience at Magashi. This allowed them to gain a deeper understanding of the guests’ point of view, and it gave us all a chance to align on our shared mission. By welcoming them as guests, we not only strengthened our bond as a team but also created a shared understanding of the incredible work that happens both in the office and in the field.

Additionally, we were happy to host Fulgence Kamanzi, a trainee manager at Wilderness Bisate, for a cross-training opportunity. In his role, Fulgence helps manage guest services and operations at Bisate. During his time at Magashi, he experienced the unique challenges of working in the bush, while also sharing valuable insights from his role at Volcanoes National Park. His perspective on day-to-day operations, particularly in guest relations and property management, greatly enriched our team. He gained deeper understanding of the differences the differences between the properties, including the contrasting experiences offered by the savannah and the volcanic landscape, as well as the logistical challenges. This exchange ultimately contributed to enhancing the overall guest experience at Magashi.
